Rome Remastered is a solid update to the game. I know some people can't deal with the UI changes but the UI changes are not clearly worse than the original and its far better in significant ways. Divide and Conquer, the biggest (and frankly best) overall mod out there if you want a LotR conversion. Stainless Steel, the 2nd best. If you want to experience Medieval II, but better and with tons of additional factions and a much bigger map this is THE mod you want to try. Also comes with several submods of its own which add even more factions.
