It could be a dead battery, loose or corroded battery cables, or a problem with your alternator, which is the part that charges your vehicle’s battery. It might also be a bad solenoid, starter failure, or engine timing. But battery, battery cable, and alternator problems are the most common cause for this click or clicking noise.

Saturday morning I was taking the Mrs to the train station & all of a sudden a knocking sound suddenly appeared once id got up to 50mph & eased off the accelerator. I got out & checked underneath the car, as it sounded as though something was catching on the inside of the passenger wheel arch - nothing visible.

Time to rev up the engine a bit. If the car doesn’t start, recheck the connection. The dead car battery would charge up within 10-15min. When you have done, and your engine gets going, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order (negative first and then positive). If there’s a problem where your car doesn’t make any noise at all when starting, the starter solenoid is one of the more likely culprits. The starter solenoid is the cylindrical object on top of the motor. It simultaneously pushes out the pinion and completes the circuit so the starter motor turns.

However, after the 5th attempt or so, I would hear this clicking and grinding noise (Noise begins at 0:05 mark and ends at 0:19 in video below) which continues even after I remove the key from the ignition. After the noises stop and when I attempt to start the engine again, the engine would be able to start as usual.

1. Weak battery. The leading cause of clicking noise and no start in Ford Explorer is weak battery. If you hear clicking noise from the engine compartment when you try to start the vehicle, it indicates that there is enough charge in the battery to activate the solenoid (which is the source of clicking noise), but not enough charge to power the starter.

Do nothing: Let the battery charge for a few minutes. Engage your Transit Connect’s Starter: If it seems like it’s acting differently (flashing less or trying to start), adjust the jumper cable contacts and let it charge some more. Remove the jumper cables: Reverse the process. 3. 0qvrtx.
